Boulder
Like to hike? Boulder boasts dozens of nature trails and parks. Trails circling through Boulder Mountain Park take walkers between huge leaning rock slabs. Catch a star talk at Fiske Planetarium, or grab an inner tube and let Boulder Creek carry you right through the center of town. Explore the mysteries of severe storms and other weather wonders with interactive displays at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
Estes Park
Take your family to the topride the Aerial Tramway to Prospect Mountains peak for views of the town and stunning scenery. Or visit MacGregor Ranch and Museum, a working cattle ranch that gives kids a taste of life as an 1870s homesteader. Late July brings the Rooftop Fair and Rodeo to town, while winter visitors can catch snow sculpture contests, snowmobile events, and more at the Winter Carnival at Grand Lake.
Rocky Mountain National Forest
Spectacular peaks, canyons, rock walls, and wildlife await! Kids love the trail to Gem Lake, lined by boulders that are perfectly arranged for climbing. Or take Beaver Boardwalk across a pond where busy critters have left their mark. Test observation skills along Moraine Park Nature Trail or one of the many kid-friendly paths of a half mile or less. Saddle up for a guided horseback ride through alpine country, or attend a ranger-led program tailored for children. Kids who complete the Rockys Junior Ranger Program booklet about park flora, fauna, and preservation will earn a badge to take home.
