Five Local-Approved Eateries in London
With so many foreigners flocking to London this summer, you may be hard-pressed to find a true London local around town that is unless you know where to look. Londoners love their foodie scene and on any given day you'll see pubs, restaurants and street vendors busy serving an eclectic mix of cuisine to hungry locals. From traditional pub fare to pop-up kitchens, London pushes the gastronomical boundaries while staying true to its roots. Start your culinary adventure with these top five local-approved favorites:
Local Favorite Dinner with a View: Franks Cafe
A few years back, on the roof of a South London car park, local residents watched for 25 days as architects and workers erected whats now Frank's Café out of scaffolding boards, ratchet straps and bright red PVC. Proving that you don't need more than good food, good friends and a great view to be a successful restaurant, Frank's has been booming ever since. While the surroundings are simplistic the menu is a flavor explosion, with combinations like mackerel with fennel, and lamb with apricot and pistachio. The sunset views of London are superb and keep locals coming back week after week.
Local Favorite Upscale Italian: Cecconis
If the glamorous wall of Cecconi's could talk, they would share decades-old tales of royal feasts and highbrow banter over meticulously plated pastas. While ownership has changed hands over the years and Enzo Cecconi is no longer at the helm, the consistent quality of service and food has never wavered and the restaurant has maintained a loyal following. Savor decadent Italian dishes like pappardelle with rabbit ragu' and calves liver with pancetta, and cocktails reminiscent of Cecconi's Venetian roots, like Bellini and Spritz.
Local Favorite Kebab: Lahore Kebab House
If you come to London without checking out the city's Indian and Pakistani food scene, you will be sorely missing out. Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel is a local-approved Pakistani restaurant where curries, masalas, paneer and other house specials are served daily to the delight of diners. Drinks are BYOB making this as budget-friendly as it is delicious.
Local Favorite Pint: The Cow
Have you ever paired Guinness with oysters? It's actually a London favorite, and if you ask the locals where to get this stout-shellfish combo, they'll send you straight to The Cow pub on Westbourne Park Road. For years locals have been hanging out at this family-owned pub enjoying delicious seafood, well-poured pints and all-around good vibes just a few steps from busy Portobello Road.
Local Favorite Pop-Up Food Shop: Ritas
Rita's Bar & Dining is a nomadic kitchen sharing its food and drink menu with different venues around London. Most recently Rita's set up shop in the ground floor of Birthday's, a self-described "fun factory" that was in serious need of some food to fuel the fun. Now that Rita's is on the scene, locals have taken notice and the line to get in has steadily grown. Once you're inside, prepare to indulge with tasty treats like green chilli mac & cheese, soy & ginger glaze hot wings and to-die-for fish tacos.
